AGL Loy Yang Mine

As part of AGL Loy Yang’s rehabilitation plan, in 2017, some overburden previously placed at the external above ground overburden dump was instead placed in the base of the Loy Yang Mine.

Ace was awarded a contract to deliver the construction of the travel path (Civil Works Stage 1 and 2) for the relocation of travelling stacker TS4, from its current location on the external Overburden Dump, into the base of the mine.

TS4 is a crirical asset in the generation of power at both Loy Yang A and Loy Yang B power stations, and being 22 meters wide, 38 meters high, 173 meters long, with a 107.5m reach and weighing 2,100 tonnes, its relocation posed many logistical challenges.

The works were conducted both within and outside the operational areas of the mine, and no interruptions to production occurred.

ACE Civil was involved in the following scope of works:

  • 19km travel path
  • Reshaping the 30 m wide travel path to the appropriate grades
  • Site preparation
  • Clearing and grubbing
  • Topsoil management
  • Bulk earthworks
  • Stump removal from harvested plantation
  • Culvert construction
  • Reshaping batters
  • Fire services pipe installation
  • Re-topsoiling
  • Reseeding

Ace was subsequently engaged to deliver a second package of works, for the Below Grass L410 Conveyor Formation.

Works included:

  • Earthworks
  • Drainage
  • Pavements
  • Crushed rock access roads
  • Cement treated crushed rock pavement for the conveyor
  • Below ground stormwater drainage
  • Rock lined swales and batter protection
  • Service conduits under the formation
  • Hardstands for the Head End assembly
